Velvet Leaf Gaura, Lizard Tail

Family: Onagraceae

Plant Description: Annual to 1.5 m or higher with oblanceolate to lanceolate leaves 2-15 cm long, alternate, margins entire. Plant with velvet hair throughout. Flowers in spikes, the petals 2-4 mm long, white turning pink or rose.

Plant Trivia:

Field Identification: To about 50 cm high the plant is a single, erect structure. It then bifurcates forming two branches in a “V” pattern.

Occurrence: Frequent on various soils in stream bottoms, ravines, ditches, and waste places.

Bloom Period: March-August

Plant Use: Good nectar source for insects.
