Plant Description: Perennial to about one foot tall, forms loosely branched clumps. Leaves ovate, 5-20 mm long, opposite. Leaf blade margins of the mid and upper leaves usually entire, the lower ones sometimes minutely toothed, the teeth rounded. Flowers solitary, axillary, 2-lipped, bilateral; corolla 5-13 mm long, blue-violet with whitish blotch on lower lip.
Plant Trivia: The plant gets its name from the cap-like seed capsules that remain on the plant after the seeds are dropped.

Occurrence: Frequent on various soils in prairies and openings or on beach shell.
