Description: Tufted perennial to 80 cm tall with leaves 2-6 mm wide. Spikelets 3-5 mm long. Achenes 1.3-1.5 mm long. Cylindrical inflorescence.
Location: Sandy openings, prairies, and dunal areas. Southeastern U.S. from southern New York and Massachusetts south to Florida and west to Texas and Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Soil Type: Sand
Trivia: “Retrorse” means “turned backward or downward,” referring to the perigynia of the spikelets that face downward when mature.
