Petunia

Ruellia spp.

Family: Acanthaceae

Ruellia or wild petunia is a difficult plant to be confident in identifying due to its tenacity for hybridization both in the wild and in cultivation. The original characteristics for each species tend to be “diluted” very easily. In general, wild petunia is easily identified as a genus. Flowers are tubular, papery, purple to whitish, have pedicles with terminal flowers, 4 stamens, and corollas between 3-7 cm long. More work will be done on this species for latter pages. For now, the key to species and varieties is found in Plants of the Texas Coastal Bend by Roy L. Leyman, Ruth O’Brien, and Tammy White. Several photos of different species are show above.
