Petunia

Ruellia spp.

Family: Acanthaceae

Ruellia, Wild Petunia, is a difficult plant to be confident in your identification. Due to its tenacity for hybridization both in the wild and in cultivation, it tends to have diluted the original characteristics for each species. In general, wild petunia is easily identified as a genus. Flowers are tubular, papery, purple to whitish, have pedicles, have terminal flowers, have 4 stamens and corollas between 3-7 cm long. More work will be done on this species for latter pages. For now, the key to species and varieties is found in Plants of the Texas Coastal Bend by Roy L. Leyman, Ruth O’Brien, and Tammy White. Several photos of different species are show above.
