Chasmanthium latifolium

Description: A rhizomatous perennial with culms to 1.5 m tall. Leafy for 80% of its height. Spikelets with 6-25 florets, lower 1-3 sterile, fertile ones diverging at about 45 degrees. Blooms Spring and Summer. Inflorescences droop. Seeds are oak-like.

Location: Widespread in woodlands, forests openings and along stream banks.

Soil Type: Most soils.

Trivia: This grass grows well in shaded areas.

Economic, Environmental Importance: Popular as ornamental. Birds and rodents eat the seeds; sensitive to grazing.
