Spartina spartinae

Description: A perennial that forms dense clumps that arise from nonrhizomic root system. Culms to 2 m long. Ligules 1-2 mm long. Panicles 6-70 cm long, cylindric. The leaf blades are short, stiff, and enrolled on drying and have a sharp point. Flower are stout, 15-25 dm long with 10-75 spikes per head, each 10-35 mm long. Blooms Sprin-Summer.

Location: Found on fresh to brackish coastal flats and sometimes along the upland edges of salt marshes. Mostly, coastal Texas.

Soil Type: Sandy and clayey soils.

Trivia: Tolerates short periods of submergence but prefers the transitional zone between wetland and upland areas. Can become dominant over a large area.

Economic, Environmental Importance: Dence clump formation provides habitat for many small animals. Foor for wildlife and fair for livestock.
