Plant Description: Twining vine witt simple opposite deciduous leaves. Uppermost leaves, especially those below the flowers and fruits, united around the stem and thus perfoliate, an unusual feature. Flowers and fruits in terminal cllusters. Corolla 35-55 mm long, the tube slenderly trumpet-shaped, teh lobes nearly equal. Ovary inverior. Fruits red, juicy, about 7 mm across.
Plant Trivia: There is another Lonicera, L japonica, that is invasive. Native of Asia. We do not have it in our counties.
Field Identification:
Occurrence: Occasional in thin woods, climbing shrubs and fences, sometimes trailing. Grows in sandy or clayey soils.
Bloom Period: March-July
Plant Use: Mostly found in landscape settings; good butterfly and hummingbird nectar source.
