Plant Description: Thornless evergreen shrub to 2.7 m tall with gray or whitish obovate leaves 1-3 m long, alternate or fascicled at the nodes, with dense white hairs. Flowers solitary, borne from the leaf axils, the corolla bilateral 2-3 cm long, pink-lavender to purple.
Plant Trivia: The Spanish common name, the meaning “ash,” refers to the ashy colored leaves.
Field Identification: Obvious gray-whitish bush (few other similar plants).
Occurrence: Frequent on caliche ridges or calcareous knolls, bluffs, slopes and ravines. Throughout our area.
Bloom Period: Spr-Fall (extensive blooming after rainfall).
Plant Use: Attractive, requires little water when established; used in landscaping. Occasionally browsed by white-tailed deer.
