Plant Description: Deciduous tree to 20 m high with finely toothed, elliptic leaves 1.5-4 cm long, alternate, prominent veins. Flowers perfect or unisexual on the same plant, clustered along the branches. Tepals 1.5-22 mm long, purplish.
Plant Trivia: Fruit is called a samara, it is favorite site for Spanish moss, Tillandsia usneoides.
Field Identification: Rough bark and branches, and opposite, corky wings on the twigs. Leaves are simple, alternate and with serrated edges.
Occurrence: Frequent along streams and ravines and other well-watered places.
Bloom Period: August-September
Plant Use: Good tree for browse and fruit. Many small mammals and birds nest, loaf and roost in cedar elm. Utilized as ornamental shade or landscape tree.
