Description: A cespitose perennial bunch grass growing up to 2.5 m tall. This is one of the easiest grasses t recognize. Found mostly in riparian areas this tall grass is a bunchgrass. In the fall it appears erect and bronze in color with large fluff seedheads. During spring and summer, it can be recognized by the very flat sems at the base of the plant.
Location: Throughout most of the eastern half of Texas. Common and easily recognizable roadside species of ditches, bogs, and other wet areas. Tolerates moderate salt conditions.
Soil Type: Most soils that remain damp.
Trivia: Cespitose means in dense tufts or clumps. Cut to ground before new Spring growth.
Economic, Environmental Importance: Poor livestock and wildlife values; is used as an ornamental. Larval host: Skippers and Satyrs, Common Wood-Nymph (Cercyonis pegala). Provides seeds, cover and nesting material for various wildlife including many birds. This is a n easily; recognizable riparian tall grass
